Use an Android tablet as a front desk Self Check-In station. MatAdmin Kiosk is free and connects with a kiosk link from your active MatAdmin account. The Android app does not use owner sign-in.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:

  • An active MatAdmin account.
  • An Android tablet running Android 9 or later with access to Google Play.
  • A screen lock set on the tablet to protect its owner controls.

Get the App

Install MatAdmin Kiosk on Google Play on the tablet you plan to leave at the front desk.

Create a Kiosk Link

In MatAdmin, open Kiosk from the left navigation under Operations, then choose Create kiosk. Create a separate kiosk link for each device and copy the link MatAdmin shows. This lets you revoke access to one tablet without affecting another. Keep each link on a trusted staff device.

Connect the Tablet

Open MatAdmin Kiosk. When the app shows Kiosk token required, paste the entire kiosk link from your clipboard into Kiosk link or token and tap Start. The app saves the connection on this tablet. You do not need to sign in with the owner's MatAdmin password.

Use Self Check-In

Students search for their name or tap I have a code and enter their member code. They choose the class they are attending and confirm the check-in. A check-in can be undone for a few seconds after it is recorded. Students can switch the kiosk between English and Spanish.

Keep the Tablet Ready

The screen stays awake while MatAdmin Kiosk is open, so plug in the tablet during front desk use.

When Android asks whether to pin the screen, choose the option to pin the app. Screen pinning keeps students in the kiosk, but it can be ended with Android's unpin gesture. Set a screen lock so Android requires the tablet's PIN, pattern, or password after unpinning. Pinning does not relaunch the app after it is closed or the tablet restarts. Open the app again from the launcher and pin it when prompted.

Owner Controls and Disconnecting

Tap the very top-left corner of the screen five times quickly, within two seconds, to open the owner menu. It includes Reload the kiosk page, Unpin the screen, and Disconnect this kiosk. Unpin and Disconnect first ask for the tablet's PIN, pattern, or password when a screen lock is set.

Disconnect this kiosk removes the saved kiosk link from this tablet. To stop that link from working, use Disable kiosk in the Kiosk area in MatAdmin. The app returns to its token screen within about a minute after the link is disabled.

Common Issues

If Wi-Fi drops, the kiosk displays Can’t reach MatAdmin right now. Check in at the front desk. It reconnects when the network returns, and you do not need a new link.

If the app asks for a link again, the device may have been disconnected, its app data may have been cleared, or its link may have been disabled. If you still have that link and it is active, paste it again. If you no longer have it, use Get new link for that kiosk in MatAdmin and paste the new link. If the old link was disabled, create a new kiosk and paste its link. If Start seems to do nothing, close the on-screen keyboard to see the message below the field.
